Terry Pratchett's Discworld

They're everywhere. They lurk at bus stops. They haunt bookshops (and occasionally staff!). They roam libraries. Sometimes you might see one in a second-hand bookstore, but they usually look very disappointed. Terry Pratchett fans are omnipresent. That girl giggling in the subway? She's one. The businessman guffawing on a park bench, sandwich forgotten beside him? He's another. And the woman with fourteen holes in her ears, torn fishnet stockings and green eyebrows carries a tattered copy of The Light Fantastic in her back pocket. The point is, Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels appeal to just about everyone. It's no wonder his fan base is so broad and varied, for his books display such historical knowledge, humour, philosophy and satire that they couldn't help but have something for everyone. The problem with Pratchett is that he's very, very addictive, which causes angst for those fans in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave for the simple reason that as a UK writer, Pratchett has different publishing deals in the USA, creating complex rights and distribution knots that result in titles being unavailable or years behind the UK publishing schedule. Here is where the friendly Nebula staff come in. Here in the True North Strong and Free we have a polite lifetime Associate Membership in the United Kingdom, and as a happy result we have access to the UK editions. So if you're having trouble completing your Pratchett collection, look no further! (And remember, with the exchange rates the way they are, US customers save almost 40% off these Canadian prices!)

Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents - Terry Pratchett - Ballentine Books . $10.95 Canadian funds . .
One rat, popping up here and there, squeaking loudly, and taking a bath in the cream, could be a plague all by himself. After a few days of this, it was amazing how glad people were to see the kid with his magical rat pipe. And they were amazing when the rats followed hint out of town. They'd have been really amazed if they'd ever found out that the rats and the piper met up with a cat somewhere outside of town and solemnly counted out the money. The Amazing Maurice runs the perfect Pied Piper scam. This streetwise alley cat knows the value of cold, hard cash and can talk his way into and out of anything. But when Maurice and his cohorts decide to con the town of Bad Blinitz, it will take more than fast talking to survive the danger that awaits. For this is a town where food is scarce and rats are hated, where cellars are lined with deadly traps, and where a terrifying evil lurks beneath the hunger-stricken streets....Set in Terry Pratchett's widely popular Discworld, this masterfully crafted, gripping read is both compelling and funny. When one of the world's most acclaimed fantasy writers turns a classic fairy tale on its head, no one will ever look at the Pied Piper -- or rats -- the same way again!

When a wizardly experiment goes adrift, the wizards of Unseen University find themselves with a pocket universe on their hands: Roundworld, where neither magic nor common sense seems to stand a chance against logic. The Universe, of course, is our own. And Roundworld is Earth. As the wizards watch their accidental creation grow, we follow the story of our universe from the primal singularity of the Big Bang to the Internet and beyond. Through this original Terry Pratchett story (with intervening chapters from Cohen and Stewart) we discover how puny and insignificant individual lives are against a cosmic backdrop of creation and disaster. Yet, paradoxically, we see how the richness of a universe based on rules, has led to a complex world and at least one species that tried to get a grip of what was going on... Terry Pratchett is the bestselling author of the Discworld novels; Ian Stewart is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick; Jack Cohen is a biologist and science writer.

Thief Of Time - Terry Pratchett - Corgi publishing . $10.99 Canadian funds . .
TIME IS A RESOURCE. EVERYONE KNOWS IT HAS TO BE MANAGED. And on Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like underwater -- how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities where there's never enough time. But the construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time for Lu Tze and his apprentice Lobsang Ludd. Because it will stop time. And that will only be the start of everyone's problems. The Unadulterated Cat - Terry Pratchett - 0752853694 - MacArthur - $18.95 Canadian Funds . .
Can you recognize a real, unadulterated cat when you see one? Or have you too grown used to the boring, mass-produced cats the advertising industry adores? Real cats never eat from bowls (at least not the ones marked CAT). Real cats do eat quiche. And giblets. And butter. And anything else left on the table. They can hear a fridge door opening two rooms away. Terry Pratchett took a side step away from Discworld in The Unadulterated Cat, a hilarious insight into the world of the feline. Amusingly illustrated by cartoonist Gray Jolliffe, Pratchett delivers a wonderfully funny collection of anecdotes that anyone, cat owner or not, will be hard pressed not to smile at. Not quite a replacement for a Discworld novel, but your sides will split just the same.

Dark Side of the Sun - Terry Pratchett - 0552133264 - Random - $9.99 Canadian Funds . .
Dom Salabos had a lot of advantages. As heir to a huge fortune he had an excellent robot servant (with Man-Friday subcircuitry), a planet (the First Syrian Bank) as a godfather, a security chief who even ran checks on himself, and on Dom's home world even death was not always fatal. Why then, in an age when prediction was a science, was his future in doubt?
